Transformers is the bomb
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I have risked both life and limb to see Transformers tonight, and it was no disappointment. More on the risking of life and limb in a moment…
As for the movie, let me tell you my friends, you will not find a more spectacular, slam-bang, hang-on-to-your-ass movie this year. Maybe ever. Period. That holds true whether you’re an existing fan or not. A giant robot punching another giant robot in the face so hard his mechanical eyeball pops out is objectively cool. There can be no argument to the contrary.
I was an existing fan back in the day but I was pretty much out of it by the time they started turning into crap other than cars and jets and dinosaurs. However, they put in enough references the old-school Transformers that anyone except the most cynical fanboy should be more than happy. There are several homages to the cartoon as well as many direct quotes, including at least one from the original animated film. So if you’re one of those dudes who are bent out of shape that Megatron doesn’t turn into a pistol, you just need to skip it and Shut. The. Hell. Up.
As for the risking-of-life-and-limb part, some jackass thought it would be funny to call in a bomb threat to the theater, so when we got there everybody was standing in the parking lot. Fortunately we only had to wait about 20 minutes for the all clear. The picture above is a phone-pic from my view at the back of the line. That will make for some interesting conversation for a little while.
If I haven’t endorsed it heartily enough, let me point out that Transformers was so good I forgot all about the bomb threat until I got home.
Oh! I almost forgot, there was also an awesome trailer for a movie that Hollywood has somehow managed to keep a secret. I won’t give it away, but trust me when I say it’s one of the best movie trailers I’ve ever seen. And the finishing touch? They don’t even give you the title of the movie.
What else can I say but, “Transform and roll out.”
(And yes, another Year In Pictures “catch-up” post is on the way.)

COOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL.
John and I are going to see it tonight at the end of our road trip.
