Making Comics

Scott McCloud, author of Understanding Comics, paid a vist to my old alma mater tonight. He’s on a tour of all 50 states promoting his latest book.

If you appreciate comics on any level above just reading them, you’d probably enjoy his talk. His schtick is basically comics as a form. He looks at things like the history of comics, the ways in which stories are told, the way the mind fills in the blanks between panels, the differences in comics from different nations, where comics are headed in the future… That kind of thing.

He had a massive slide presentation that wasn’t the least bit boring, and best of all, it was free. Hard to go wrong with free.

If he hasn’t been to your state yet (check the link above for the tour schedule), you could do a lot worse than to check him out when he makes it to your neck of the woods.

As for the photo, it was really hard getting a decent picture in a darkened room, but I managed a few. I had one that was better than this, but the slide was pretty boring, so I opted for this one.

And in case I haven’t mentioned it, I really want a DSLR.
