The gap, as it were

Like many of My Generation (that being “X”), when I want to mock someone as being unAmerican, or blame A Faceless Mass for something that’s gone wrong, or for simply not agreeing with me, I bust out the word “Communist.”

I do have better vocabulary in my Arsenal, if you will, but the word is designed for, and used in such fashion as to achieve, Maximum Comedic Effect.

“What do you mean you don’t like the new Battlestar Galactica? What are you, a Communist?”

Etc.

Imagine my chagrin, when recently I’ve come to notice that such behavior ever more clearly delineates The Gap between myself and Kids These Days, because apparently the hip thing to say is “terrorist” or “al Qaeda.”

“You don’t want an iPod? What are you, al Qaeda?”

And so forth…

    Okay, you know,that quote, “What do you mean you don’t like the new Battlestar Galactica? What are you, a Communist?” could probably be aimed at me. But since I don’t hang around with the ‘Kids These Days,’ I have no clue how they speak or what they speak and honestly, I don’t care. I know we’ll never speak the same language, I know I don’t with my folks.
